There is a mysterious phenomena in Carpet Cleaning. It is called the Wick Back. It occurs most often with steam cleaning and with deep stains. Normally if the stain was created with a lot of liquid and it went deep into the carpet.
Also it is really a common occurrence with commercial carpet and Berbers. Carpet installed directly to the subfloor or concrete is more likely to wick back also. When you install carpet with a pad it limits wicking some.

As the carpet dries the spot will come back. What is happening is the dampness in the carpet is siphoning up the carpet fiber and bringing the stain that remained lower in the carpet back up the fiber and into view.
